Transmission Tower in Marine Environment, Mumbai
Transmission Tower in Marine Environment, Mumbai
Problem:
- RCC foundation of transmission tower line was on Mumbai coastline
- Alternate drying and wetting of RCC, creating splash zone leading to severe corrosion of steel
- General repair methods failed due to aggressive condition
- Required repeated repairs
- Difficult site to approach – no approach road, electricity & potable water
Solution:
- Surface preparation by removing all loose materials and coating on RCC surface
- Steel Treatment: Migratory corrosion inhibitor and protective steel coating
- Concrete impregnation was carried out by pressure grouting to ensure sealing of all cracks
- Section reconstruction by polymer modified mortar and micro concrete
- Fiber wrapping on repaired surface and coating for UV protection.
- 25 nos. of towers were completed in 15 months and being monitored for last 5 years
RESTORING INFRA OF THE NATION
Problem:
- 25-year-old transmission tower has its RCC foundations subjected to alternate wetting and drying in marine waters.
- Two towers collapsed as corrosion damaged foundation failed, leaving a quarter of Mumbai population without electricity.
Solution:
- RCC repairs were performed with micro-concrete
- Cathodic protection with sacrificial anodes and galvanized plates to resist corrosion electrochemically.
- Carbon fiber wrapping for confinement and integrity of RCC
- A total of 30 towers were restored on sea and land, and have been performing well for the past 10 years.
