Earthquake Damages, Rehabilitation & Retrofitting: IFFCO Kandla
Problem:
- Failure of RCC structure because of Bhuj earthquake in 2001
- Acid spillage is often encountered
- Plant is near sea coast, steel reinforcement cannot be used in such aggressive environment
- Plant had to be commissioned within 30 days as loss of production was not insured
Solution:
- Preliminary repairs with micro-concrete and polymer modified mortar
- Wrapping of failed members and beam column connection with glass fiber reinforcement
- Plant was re-started within 30 days
- Observations over last 11 years do not show any sign of decay indicating high durability of repair system in very aggressive environment

Strengthening Masonry Walls, South Mumbai
Problem:
- 90 years old brick masonry building
- Floor to floor height 20 feet
- Client created additional floor of 10 feet each in between
- Additional floor load caused failure of brick columns
Solution:
- Support was provided immediately prior to carrying out the repairs.
- All the damaged brick columns were wrapped with bidirectional glass fiber wraps
- After wrapping brick piers were grouted with polymers cement slurry
- The job was completed in 4 days
- Showing excellent performance for last 7 years

Problem:
- G+3- 90 years old timber masonry structure in South Mumbai
- Timber structure frame joints were badly affected by termite attack
- This has affected stability of frame
- Residents were against providing steel frame supports, which would have affected their movement in home giving feeling of unsafe structure
Solution:
- Timber joist were cleaned and anti-termite treatment was carried out
- Stiffening of beam column joint was carried out by using glass fiber wraps
- Small steel cages were introduced and gaps were filled with micro concrete followed by wrapping
Salient Features:
- Total 200 nos. of joints were treated without relocating occupants of building
- Total 1200 Kgs of FRP materials were used as against 90 T of steel initially proposed
- Entire work was completed in 6 months period
- Retrofit system performing in satisfactory manner for last 7 years
